Who are you? Ask your Hair

Our society reflects all kinds of different facets of hair. There are so many different ways to dress the hair, comb the hair, or shape the hair but what does hair really do for us? Besides making us look good or position us in different social classes, how does it make us feel about ourselves, and how is it able to make us feel, anyway? Hair not only changes our look, but also changes who we are and what others perceive us to be. Through hair we become anew or outdated. Through hair we can discover who we are.

Hair is a filament that is mostly made up of protein (keratin in particular), that the body produces underneath the epidermis (first layer of skin). One of the main functions of hair is to aid the body as an extra layer of protection. Besides aiding the body as an extra layer of protection the hair can also indicate what’s going on health wise internally with the body and in a lot of cases what’s going on mentally with a person. Dry brittle hair can indicate different things ranging from simple neglect to thyroid problems. Shedding in hair can indicate a number of things as well from changing seasons, stress, to even poor diet. No wonder why hair is one of our most visible indications of what could be going on in each of our individual lives.

Hair can make or break us depending on how it looks when we leave our homes to start a new day. Many scenarios can be made about what’s going on in someone’s life from just looking at one’s hair. If you’ve been feeling unmotivated, uninspired, depressed, or burned out your hair could reflect that. When our energies are low it’s very difficult for us to find the motivation to get dressed in the morning let alone style or be creative with our hair. We may just throw it up in a ponytail (the ones who can) and wear it like that for the day, but digging deeper still that ponytail, depending on how neat it is, can indicate how low our energies really are.  For example tossed up with little effort can show stress, laziness, or low self-esteem. Combed back nice and neatly into a ponytail can indicate optimism or even how much patience a person has. Hair definitely does reflect our ever-changing moods.

Besides indicating how we’re feeling hair can show a lot about who we are beyond our social status. If you’re artistic at heart and positive thinking you may be inclined to do your own hair showing the different moods that rotate and change around just as your artistic temperament does. If this were true for you it wouldn’t matter if you were rich or poor your hair would show the artist in you. Extreme business oriented people may not have some much interest in doing their own hair. Business oriented people are tactful, punctual, and systematic in a lot of ways. In more instances then not this person will leave the task of styling their own hair to professionals. In fact, it’s possible for them to even have a particular scheduling pattern due to their busy life-style. An extreme business oriented person will also go for a more sophisticated look that reflects feeling more serious. Again despite social class, rich or poor, the hair will reveal the serious personality in an extreme business oriented person. You have both you say? You are artistic with a little business savvy? Just like there are many hairstyles and many personalities, if you are that way you could have a style with simplicity but a very artistic flare. For example your style could consist of vibrant colors fused together in a very striking way, but shaped in a very simple conservative style. You show seriousness to your intellect with a tribute to your artistic emotions. This also could go the other way around depending on the combination of other things that make up your personality. Everyone is different.

Hair can say so much about you. Rather you cut your hair off to symbolize a new start. Or rather you grow it long, which can reflect transition as well as perseverance. Despite many things that keep us apart, hair is one thing we all share in common. Besides clothes hair is one of the only things that can give a real indication of who we are and what we’re feeling like without speaking. What does your hair whisper about you?
