The Benefits of Having Great Clients

Since being a cosmetologist for over 15 years I have had the opportunity to work with all kinds of personalities. Each one has blessed me in some way with insights to the human condition. Rather it has been hearing a client’s life experience over a span of a decade or just meeting one for the first time and never seeing them again. Each one has impacted or added to my life in some way. One great thing about being a cosmetologist is that you have a chance to make so many great connections. Clients can come with gifts such as having a really great head of hair that allows you to produce something very beautiful or some may have great connections and opportunities that they are generous enough to share with you. Others can have stories that may change your life or at less change your perspective as to how you may view the world. Either way, there can be so much to gain by having a diverse clientele.

Some clients have remarkable stories and ones that can be so relevant to your own story. I love working with older clients sometimes because they are full of experience. There have been so many times that I may have been going through something in my own life and an older client has been there to share wisdom with me that can help me to see the situation differently. A shared experience can definitely give you a new perspective on why certain things are happening to you. I can't tell you how many times a wise word has helped me through a very tough time. One example was an older woman named MiMi, who I serviced for a few years. I was having some issues with doing things alone. Exploring the world by myself because the interests I had weren’t relevant to my peers. She said,  "sometimes you just have to do things on your own so that you don’t miss out on experiences that will enrich your life." If you stay doing the same things just because you can’t find anyone to do new things with then you will miss out on growth that is destine for you and you alone.

Sometimes when you go off on your own you will find treasures that only you can understand and that is why they were meant to be experienced alone. That totally changed my perspective about independence and the potential for growth through solitary exploration.

Older clients are not the only ones that can add more value to your life. A lot of my younger clients have really fresh perspectives as well. It’s important to keep younger clients in the chair, because they keep you in the loop of what’s going on with the world today. Many of our youth are very concerned with what’s going on in the world more than you would think. There are so many that have insightful opinions about the issues we face today. Unhindered by the traditions of the past they have unconventional ideas that would really make you think twice about many things.

Besides, hearing some of their stories also remind you of how far you’ve come. It  gives you an opportunity to share wisdom that you have gained from your older years. Maya Angelou said it best, “When you Learn Teach.” I learn things I also share things. Kind words or insights can actually really help others in more ways than you can initially see. I like talking and sharing with younger folks because it blesses me in a way as well. It gives me the opportunity to contribute and positively influence the next generations. Just how the words that have impacted my life from my older teachers still ring in my head at certain moments of my life so shall your words have impact on those who are coming after you. You never know how you're influencing others around you.

Being blessed with a clientele that consists of Doctors, Lawyers, nurses, teachers, councilors, and students, has given me wealth of knowledge within my own tribe. Don’t sleep on the wisdom of a cosmetologist. They may have not seen the whole world or moved around much, but I can be certain that a lot of pieces of the world have come to see them.

There could be lots of gems within their minds that we all could benefit from.
